Afer secularization of the Mission San Gabriel, parcels of land were issued to the Spanish and Mexican soldiers and their families. The Indians remaining at the mission went to live on these ranchos as domestics and cowboys. The Rancho gardens included crops of chile peppers, tomatoes, beans, squash, and corn.

The Spanish Rancho Garden is home to a variety of culinary plants that are common to Southern California, though not original natives to the area. Grown on a seasonal basis, these vegetables help tell the story of colonization by highlighting the introduction of new crops to the people and land.
